September 20, 2005

Mayor Alex Knopp, Antonio Mondonico, Mauro Mondonico and Alex Stanek receive the official proclamation naming Saturday September 20, 2005 as Mondonico and Smart Cycles Day in the city of Norwalk!   The Mondonicos were at Smart Cycles on Antonio's last-ever sizing tour of his legendary frame building career.  We were honored with the Proclamation for our support of the Harvest Ride fundraiser for the Make A Wish Foundation.   Antonio donated a frame and Smart Cycles donated a parts package for the event!

MONDONICO SIZING TOUR 2003
Smart Cycles - September 20th 2003

Antonio Mondonico, Phil Miano, Mauro Mondonico
Read Miano's coverage of the day at the Daily Peloton

An opportunity came our way in the Summer of 2003. Bill Mcgann, owner of Torelli Imports, called us and informed us that he had just comfirmed the 2003 Mondonico Sizing Tour and was thinking that we should be a stop on the 10 day tour of the US.

Well you might think that our first reaction was "SIGN US UP BABY!"....but it went more like..."What is a Mondonico Sizing Tour?"...I knew what it sounded like, but it seemed too simple, maybe naive, to assume that a legendary Italian frame builder would want to come to Smart Cycles in Connecticut.  Well, I was wrong in thinking that!

What ended up happening that day was awesome.  It was September 20th... and at about 2pm, 3 men pulled up in a rent-a-car and walked thru the door.  Bill McGann was flanked by Antonio Mondonico (aforementioned legend) and his son, Mauro.

Kris Klimeketting Fitted by the MAN Himself!

Kris's bike on April 4, 2004!  Photo of her on bike coming soon!

19 cycling enthusiasts were waiting to meet the master for a personal fitting to have a one-of -a-kind MONDONICO bicycle built for them by the master himself.  That we had 3 walk-ups to cap the event at 22 high end bike sales in ONE DAY was what I thought would be the highlight for me (hey...I'm allowed to gloat over such success)...but once again, I misjudged.

John Seuche On September 20th with Antonio and Mauro!

John Seuche on April 2, 2004!

What I realized very quickly that day was that the magic that cycling brings to the people who participate in it never gets dull.  ONE out of 22 people getting custom bikes was a racer. Everyone else was looking to take either their casual riding or serious non-competetive riding to the next level in comfort, performance and ENJOYMENT....key word.

I didn't have a pre-judged idea of how Mondonico and Bill McGann would run their end of the day...but watching them spread knowledge and info was inspiring.  Antonio spoke the language of cycling (as he isn't fluid in english).  His son was the bridge between the clients and his farther.  McGann was the "technical director"!

to a MONDONICO customer.

What impressed me most about the day was the basic lesson each man preached in his own way...comfort, feel, stability, ENJOYMENT!!!!  No stuffy racer jargon...no frowning at the mention of other brands or "schools of thought".  Indeed they were selling hard goods, but one could tell that they knew, without reservation, that the first mile their new American friends would pedal on the bikes they would labor over for them would be "end-game"!  And it was clear that they took pleasure in knowing that these riders would gather a great deal of ENJOYMENT from the frames that they would put their hearts into.

Peter stops by the shop riding "Orange Crush"...how does that translate into Italian?!

Read Peter's first impression of his bike:

Alex,
I didn't get to stop by on my first ride but I will this week. I can't say enough about the even though it was just a short first ride. I was a little surprised by the stiffness of the frame, but then again I test rode a bike that was 6 cm larger than mine so it was most likely a little flexier. Having said that, the stiffness in no way hurt the compliance of the frame, it's a sweet ride. It goes downhill like a cannonball in a groove. Real stable and fast. It climbs as well as my Fondriest does and that's at 3 lbs heavier too so that's a real nice surprise. I plan to get out this week and take a much longer rides so I'll really get to know this bike. The one thing that really stands out is the fit. On my other bikes which "fit me" my hands never reached the hoods.
On my Mondonico my hands fall right onto the hoods. I guess there's a bike that "fits well" and a bike that really fits and this really fits. Thanks again for
everything during this process and I'll swing by the shop during one of my
rides.
-Peter
